I am planning my route and getting my things together. There's more things to do than I initially anticipated. The route has roughly been planned out, though I think I will keep adjusting it as I go along.

The plan is to go through Grisons into Italy, cycle in the dolomites over to the slovenian alps, up to Vienna and then through Austria and parts of Germany back to Switzerland. In total I have about 1 month of time for this trip.

At about 8 in the morning I had all things packed and went on my way towards the mountains. It was a cloudy day, sometimes even a bit cold, but not too bad. I managed to go a good bit towards the mountains and the bike is going well. I have found a nice camping spot right at the Lake „Walensee“ with a great view. After a long day of cycling I could cool down in the cold water.

||||
In my initial plan I didn‘t intend to go to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. I am glad I changed my mind. The ride from Bled was the shortest so far, but along the way I met some fellow cyclists in a Café, so I rode to Ljubljana with them. Once in the city I found a hostel right in the center. I met up with the cyclists again and we went on a great 2 hour city tour through the old town and then had some drinks. The city is quite small but really charming, there is a castle overlooking the old town and there are many restaurants along the river bank.<figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

After another break I was ready again for a longer distance, so I headed towards Maribor, and was just going to see how far I could make it in that day. For big parts I was on remote roads, with a highway nearby, but I was also mostly the only cyclist. At one point I met three fellow swiss cyclists, but we didn‘t meet for long. I got very quickly into much less populated areas, through many different tiny villages with no more than twenty houses. I also left the alps completely behind me and while I still had some hills, it was generally getting much flatter.

By the afternoon I realised that I would not be able to make it to Maribor, but I also did not find any camping nearby. It was getting later and darker quickly and I was getting exhausted, so I decided to go wild camping and started looking for forests. I found a spot and just as it was about to get dark managed to set up the tent. I quickly went to sleep as it was a long day…<figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

After a night in the forest I was not in a great mood when I started cycling. I was hungry but couldn‘t find a good spot to get something to eat, so I decided to go to Maribor and get something there. It was still about an hour ride away, so once I arrived, I had a long and big breakfast to regenerate. I cycled a bit through the old town but didn‘t stay for much longer, so in the end I unfortunately didn‘t see that much of the city. I headed towards the austrian border and ate lunch just before it. Once over the border I followed the „Murradweg“, a pleasant path along the small river separating the two countries. I really enjoyed having the improved cycling signs again as I returned to Austria, they are definitely better compared to Slovenia. This way I could largely follow the signs and didn‘t have to keep navigation open on my phone. The path went along many corn and pumpkin fields and small villages. For the night I found a perfect camping at a Farmer‘s place (Bauernhof), I was all alone, so plenty of room foe my tent, I had power, Internet, shower and WC, and since it was a wine maker, there was a fridge with local wines and juices. Since I was alone I didn‘t get a whole bottle of wine, instead I had a grape juice and a small „Gespritzter“ (white wine & sparkling water). <figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

Heading north towards Vienna I was mostly following the EuroVelo 9 route. Occasionally I lost it and went a bit my own way. While the area is generally not very mountainous, there were many hills I had to climb, just to ride down again right after. This combined with the hot weather still made it a fairly exhausting day. I rode through sparsely populated land, with the only city being Hartberg, which was my destination for the day. In the evening I could even stroll around a bit in the old town, since the camping site was very close.<figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

||||
From Hartberg it was another day heading north. Unfortunately I didn‘t see a sign at one point in the morning so I unnecessarily climbed up a hill, just to go down again to get on the correct route. There was a bigger climb (this time intended) and from then on it was all very pleasant downhill in a valley. I headed for Neufeld, which had a campsite directly at the lake. managed to go for a quick swim just before it got dark.<figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

I was only about 50 km from Vienna, so it would be a quick ride so I can enjoy the afternoon in Vienna. I have booked two nights in a great and centrally located hostel. I could spend some of the afternoon and the evening strolling around in the city and planning the next day. <figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

My full day in Vienna I spent mostly at the palace Schönbrunn. It‘s a big palace with an enormous garden turned into a museum, located a bit away from the centre of the city. After I did the museum tour, I spent a lot of time in the gardens, by the end I still had only seen a small part of it. Unfortunately it was not allowed to rake pictures of the inside, so I only have some from outside.<figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

So far I always had luck with the weather, it was bound to change at some point. Today was that day, as it was raining for most of the day. At least I finally had some use for the rain gear I have brought along. Today was definitely not as exciting from a scenic point of view, and with the weather I didn’t do a lot of stops. I can understand that it can get boring if one rides along the Danube for five or so days. For me this is the end of it though, as I will now go towards Salzburg, so I won’t be riding along the Danube anymore. I didn‘t actually see anything of the city Linz as I am at a camping outside the city. <figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

My legs were still sore from the day before, this in combination with the hills of today meant it was really hard to get going. Some parts of the route were a bit too steep, especially with all the baggage. Eventually I reached Davos where I am staying in a hostel for a rainy night.

After a day of rain I had a bit of luck again and the weather was ok, just a bit cold. I decided to to as many kilometers in the better weather as possible as the outlook was not looking too good. Instead of going directly to Salzburg, I went a more scenic route with some beautiful lakes and mountains. I‘m always fascinated at the big change of scenery I can get so quickly on a bike, but also at the different types of tourism I do. One day I am cycling in the mountains with most people only driving by in a car, camping in a tent next to a lake, the next I am a city tourist among many others and sleeping in a hostel. My full day in Salzburg I spent exploring the Fortress of Salzburg. It‘s sitting on a hilltop overlooking the oldtown. The museum inside is great and it was interesting learning about the history of the fortress and the city. It also provides a great view over the city. Since I did a big distance the day before, I only had a small part to cycle today, allowing me to spend more time in Salzburg. Once in the city I had trouble finding a hostel bed, as apparently there is a festival going on nearby, so demand is high. Eventually I found a place for two nights, but I had to pay more than double the normal rate… After walking around in the city for a while, it started raining heavily, so I spent a lot of time in cafés. I am planning the final days of the tour, as it is not going to be for much longer. <figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

It was a rainy day from the morning until the afternoon. After packing up my tent in the rain I started riding towards Innsbruck. I am reasonably well prepared for the bad weather, but things still get wet and it‘s also quite a bit colder than just a few days ago. I also feel it in the night, the sleeping bag is not quite good enough for lower temperatures. After about 35 km of riding I couldn‘t continue on with my route, apparently an Iron Man race is going on and the blocked the road completely. So I could either wait for 3 hours or look for an alternative. Since this was in a valley with high mountains on both sides there was no other road I could take, meanwhile the cars could go on the highway. Luckily there was a train station nearby, and after just 8 minutes a train arrived and I rode along for about three stops, for about 20 kilometers. But while I could cycle again, the race was still nearby and I was faces with various road blockings where I had to be careful or drive around them. Once passed, the ride was all good again. By this point I would have been able to see mountains all around me, instead I only saw a grey sky and fog, the rivers were brown and flowing with lots of water and debris from the rain. Once at the camping, I had a pleasant surprise. They have a little hut I could sleep in (for a bit extra), so I wouldn’t have to sleep in the tent for the night. This allowed me to dry my tent and my clothes for a bit, so I should be all good again for the next day. <figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

I really appreciated the tiny little hut, as it meant I could get dressed for the rainy ride with a roof over my head. It was a day full of rain, wich also meant I didn‘t take any pictures. It‘s unfortunate, as there should be a nice view of the mountains surrounding me. I cycled straight towards Innsbruck without many breaks. Once in Innsbruck, the rain had stopped and I walked around the city for a bit, occasionally even seeing a mountain in the background of the beautiful buildings in the old town.<figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

My last day of rest before I will be back home again. I used my day of mainly to relax and just spent my time walking around the old town, sitting in cafés and going window shopping. I would have loved to go up the mountain, as there is a way to go up directly from the city, but as it was foggy I would not have had a good view from up there. I enjoyed this little break to get some energy and planned the last part of the route. I would definitely love to come back to Innsbruck some day to see the surrounding mountains and go for a hike.<figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

Soon after starting I had the Arlbergpass ahead of me, climbing up to almost 1’800 meters. From the top I had a great view behind me but also ahead of me. I headed towards Feldkirch and was almost in Liechtenstein and Switzerland, but instead headed north and set up camp in Dornbirn, not far from the swiss border. <figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

Today I had to climb over two passes, quite a plan for the second day, at least for me it was. First up to Flüelapass, then down, through Zernez and right after came the Ofenpass through to Val Müstair. ||||
After the previous day of lots of uphills, today would be quite the opposite. Müstair is right at the border to Italy, so after just a few minutes I had already crossed the border. From there on I was on the italian cycling paths, which where quite impressive. I followed a nice path down the valley along a river, down to Meran and all the way to Bozen. The path was almost always far away from any cars, instead there were neverwnding fields of appletrees on both sides. It was a nice change of pace after the exhausting previous day. In Bozen I went in to the lovely city in the evening to walk around a bit, the campsite was just outside the city.<figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

After riding all the way down to Bozen, now it was time again to ride up. While the path was nice, I didn‘t like the highway on one side and the main rode on the other, both very close. There were many castles along the way, unfortunately I didn’t have time to stop at any of them. This was quite a long day, as I didn‘t feel very strong and had to make lots of breaks. Eventually I did reach the town though. Spontaneously I even found a host on ‚warmshowers‘, so I could sleep on their couch for the night. <figure class="wp-block-image size-large">

I decided to take a day off from cycling and stay in Lienz for another night. I am using the time to do some laundry, plan my route, update the blog and get some necessities.
